Auction Advice & Information
You may have decided to buy at auction because you want to pick up a bargain and give yourself a larger selection of vehicles to choose from.
Auctions are not for novices! If you have not been to an auction before your first visit should be as a spectator to familiarize yourself with auction procedures and the type of cars they offer. Then when you go to buy, if you don’t know much about cars, take someone with you who does and who can assess their condition and worth. The entry form attached to the windscreen will give you an idea of the vehicle’s history.
Don’t buy a car without a service history. Look for the service book, which, if not in the car, could be on the rostrum with the auctioneer. Be wary of a car which is kept locked until it is taken into the auction hall.
Listen carefully to everything that the auctioneer says about a car as it comes into the hall to go under the hammer.
Decide the maximum you intend, or can afford, to spend and stick to it.
You may wish to take advantage of services the auction has to offer, such as collection and delivery service, finance facilities, warranties etc.
You will be bound by the auction’s written terms and conditions which must be available to you before you buy. These may be posted on the wall, issued in a booklet or on some other paperwork. If there are any legal terms which are difficult to understand the auction staff will be happy to explain.
Some auctions give the purchaser a limited time to try out the vehicle and reject it if it is not suitable, but as this may be only a matter of hours, look closely at the terms of business.
There are many different categories, sold by the auctions in different sections at different times. Telephone the auction for details, or check their website.
Manufacturer Sales of nearly new ex-demonstration and ex-rental cars. These are clean cars, usually with some remaining warranty.
Finance House and Fleet Sales of cars repossessed by finance houses and fleet cars from named or un-named fleet sources. The Finance House sales include vehicles repossessed from both private individuals and businesses.
Dedicated Fleet Sales of cars, often from a single named fleet source.
Ex-Police vehicle sales are a good way to buy a high mileage, but well maintained, ex-CID or ex-beat patrol car.
Dedicated part-exchange sales by main dealer groups of excess stock of generally older cars.
Diesel, MPV and 4x4 sales.
Specialist sales of American or Japanese vehicles.
Specialist Classic and Historic car sales.
Specialist sales of Prestige, Sports and Executive cars, usually with warranted mileage, full service history and all documentation.
General Car Sales, as the name implies, can include cars from many sources, such as local authorities, companies, fleets, main dealers (often wrong make for the franchise), traders and private individuals.
Selling at auction is seriously worth considering if you have a Historic, Classic, sought-after or unusual car to sell. You are more likely to get a better price at auction than you would through local paper advertising, as these sales are usually attended by enthusiasts.
Most auction houses, large and small, are members of The RMI Society of Motor Auctions (SMA), which represents auction companies of all sizes selling cars, commercial vehicles and off-road vehicles. The SMA only accepts into membership financially viable companies which can provide evidence of sound and accepted trading practice and who must adhere to the SMA’s Code of Practice and Customer Charter.
SMA members are dedicated to providing a high standard of service to their customers whether corporate, trade or the motoring public, and to providing a safe and professional alternative for customers wishing to buy and sell, individually or in volume.
